About BodyMission CapelGym

rowing machineThere was once a little personal training studio in Five Oak Green, called BodyMission. People came, got fit, brought their friends. Now, the little studio has grown up...

I started personal training after qualifying with Premier in 2003. I thought that people would come to me for 6 weeks or so, get their confidence with gym exercise, or squeeze into their bikini (or shorts) and off they would go. I was wrong about all this, as about so many other things.

First, I discovered that I had some fairly hefty health problems to sort out with my lovely clients. High blood pressure, back problems, lung problems, ex-footballers with multiple knee repairs... I also discovered that most people who thought that they were quite fit (in spite of doing nothing but the occasional amble with the dog) weren’t. In fact in many cases they were really, really unfit.
I did some more training, qualifying as a GP referral programme Consultant with the Wright Foundation (which gives further training for qualified PTs on blood pressure and heart problems, diabetes, asthma etc) and did more training courses on back stability and muscle imbalance.

The little gym was doing well. The problem was that people who came to me wanted to carry on with their fitness training but didn’t want to go to a big gym. They had learned a lot, didn’t need as much supervision, but wanted to stay – except that personal training doesn’t come cheap, especially when ideally we should do quite a bit of training every week, not just the occasional session.

I introduced sessions where people could book to come and use the gym without one-to-one supervision, but with a programme that was specifically designed for them, and regular reviews with me. This proved popular – it was a lot cheaper.

Regulars at the gym got fitter, stronger, dropped clothes sizes, improved their blood pressure. By now there were quite a few regulars. Hardly any of them were traditional gym-goers, in fact they tended more of the chocolate ice cream and a few drinks with friends persuasion, and they were certainly not going to give that up. But being fitter and feeling so much better made the fitness habit worth keeping.

Then the gym got too small... so we have built a new one. We keep the same philosophy of a specific fitness programme for each person, a regular review, and someone to ask when you get stuck rather than being left on your own wondering if you’re “doing it right”.
